Hi, I'm not sure where to put this thread because most of the other forums don't fit, but I'm going to have a stab at it anyway (and if any mods feel that this is not the proper forum for it, then so be it).A lot of people on the Internet see social networking as an inherently evil thing, and they usually train their guns on Facebook and Google+ (for every good reasons). However, I do see social networking (and Facebook by extension) as a pretty useful thing. It makes it easier to get my monthly drinking meets together. I use it to see what events the local anime/cosplay group have going on.However, beyond the simple privacy question, I have grown to dislike Facebook because it's grown increasingly bloated. What began as a simple way for people to keep in touch, share pictures, and organize events has grown into a giant, incoherent blob of advertising, fan pages, and of course, the small little bit of the website that is relevant to an actual social network: your friends and their activity. One of my tech friends mentioned setting up a distributed social network (like pump.io or Disapora), which would solve both the problem of privacy and Facebook bloat all in one stroke... however, I'm not sure if I can convince my friends to use it and to pay for the service. So, I'm at a wall. I want to stop using Facebook, really, and convince all of my friends to move onto the next big thing in social networking. I like social networking. It's useful. But Facebook may be growing to become one of the wrong platforms for it, for many reasons. The website is a mess of features and featurettes, most of which are only present for the sake of advertising. Not to mention, Facebook's stance on privacy has not been very good, but who can blame them. Everyone needs to make their money. Please help. I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
